Business Rates

By on 29/08/2013 in Rebuttals

The Birmingham Post today (29 August) ran an article claiming that business rates collected by the city on behalf of the Government had increased by 8.9%, to £396.7m in 2012/13, as the city’s contribution to the national rates pool.

However, a true comparison should be the Net Yield after reliefs and exemptions are taken into account. Taking this into account for 2012/13 there was a 3.27% increase(£404.2m).

We would also reiterate that the council is a collection authority on behalf of the Government, who are ultimately responsible for actually setting the Business Rate.
