City council children’s home ‘outstanding’

A Birmingham City Council children's home is 'outstanding' according to government inspectors.

Warwick House children's home in Acocks Green provides respite care for children with learning and physical disabilities as well as some youngsters who have challenging behaviour.

The home recently had a major refurbishment and was officially re-opened by Lord Mayor Anita Ward earlier this month.

The inspection in June found that the home's overall effectiveness was outstanding - 'a service that significantly exceeds minimum requirements'. Ofsted rates children's homes as either outstanding, good, satisfactory or inadequate.

The report says that 'young people are safe and happy', personalised care is 'outstanding and takes full account of the individual needs of each young person' and the home is 'extremely well managed'.

The home was also rated outstanding for its outcomes, with young people feeling 'safe, valued and protected' and 'provided with high quality care within a warm, caring, nurturing environment with firm and consistent boundaries'. Relationships between young people and staff are open, friendly and show mutual respect, the report added.

Quality of care is good, with young people enjoying 'positive and constructive relationships with staff and with each other'. Safeguarding, leadership and management, and equality and diversity practice are all rated as outstanding.

Councillor Matt Bennett, executive member for children's services, said: “I was very impressed when I visited Warwick House and this report is a credit to all the staff who work there and the young people who live there. We are committed to investing in our children's homes and providing the very best accommodation for our young people.”

Manager Jacqui McElwee added: “We held an open day to celebrate the re-opening, with parents and the community invited alongside the Lord Mayor, who were all so impressed with the facility. I'm so proud that this has been reflected in the Ofsted report rating - everyone involved should be congratulated for this wonderful achievement.”
