City gritters launch Snow Angel competition

The team behind keeping Birmingham's roads safe during wintery weather is launching a hot competition on Free Radio this week for those who help others in the cold.

Amey's winter maintenance team, who work in partnership with Birmingham City Council to help the city cope when snow and ice arrives, are on the look-out for Birmingham's Top Snow Angel – the person who goes above and beyond to help their community cope when the temperatures plummet.

People in Birmingham are being asked to nominate someone who deserves a big thank you. They could be a volunteer driver delivering hot meals, a keen knitter making blankets for a local nursery or care home or simply someone who regularly checks in on a vulnerable friend or neighbour.

The winner, chosen by the gritter drivers themselves, will win a day of VIP Christmas shopping in Birmingham to say thank you.

The prize comprises of £150 of shopping vouchers, including a £50 Harvey Nichols voucher to be used at the Mailbox store, and a one night stay in the luxury MacDonald Burlington hotel, including an evening meal and breakfast, all courtesy of ShoppinginBirmingham.com.

The competition is being launched on the Foxy & Giuliano breakfast show on Free Radio and the winner will be announced on the show in the run up to Christmas.

Snow Angels can be nominated online at www.freeradio.co.uk/SnowAngels or by visiting the Amey stand in Victoria Square at this Saturday's (9th November) Christmas Parade and lights switch on.

Chris Lucas, Network Co-ordinator for Amey, said: “Our winter maintenance team works incredibly hard around the clock to help keep the city's roads safe but we recognise the huge part people play in their own communities. It might be something as simple as clearing a neighbour's drive or popping in with some essential supplies but it can make all the difference.  We want to encourage people to help out and this competition aims to thank someone for their contribution.”

Free Radio's breakfast show presenters Foxy and Giuliano added: “We love waking up Birmingham every morning, a city that is full of amazing and generous people.  We’re excited to be involved in the hunt for those that go the extra mile.  It will be a pleasure to reward their efforts.”
