The awards are grouped into the following categories:
City centre pubs and bars
Suburban pubs and bars
University bars.

This year, for the first time, there will be a category for restaurants that wish to apply. It is free for licensed premises to be assessed if they wish to be considered for the scheme. To apply visit

The assessments are done by officers from Licensing, Trading Standards, Environmental Health, The Fire Service or the Police. The purpose of the assessment is to encourage managers to adopt high standards in matters of safety.

Last year almost 100 premises were accredited through the scheme. The best licensed premises go through to the awards ceremony to be held on 14 November 2013 at the ICC on Broad Street.
