Cllr Lines welcomes Government housing strategy

Cllr John Lines, Cabinet Member for Housing, said today:

“I welcome the strategy announced by the Government today to support house building, which is important to the economy, providing much needed help for homebuyers to secure mortgages and for the creation of new jobs.

“Proposals to consult on raising the discounts under Right To Buy (RTB) is most welcome as it will help a generation of tenants to potentially purchase their properties in this very difficult economic climate and provide a welcome boost to the housing market. I hope local authorities will be in a position to retain all future RTB receipts from additional sales as part of the new financial reforms to minimise the potential impact and reinvest in new homes.

“We are already well on the way to providing over 1,300 new properties for rent and sale following a number of Government programmes, through the Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust, our council house building programme. Further support announced to tackle empty homes in the private sector will further increase the supply of homes. Our record in this area is impressive having reduced the number of empty homes from 14,000 in 2003 to just under 9,000.
“I am also pleased that there will be greater support for older people, to help improve their independence and quality of life. Over 100 households have already been assisted to move to more suitable housing, through our Wise Move scheme and further measures to assist the elderly to adapt their homes, or move to more suitable housing will be welcome to all.

“I look forward to working with Government, my officers, our tenants and our many partners in the city, to ensure Birmingham builds on its success by building new homes and providing employment and training opportunities for local people.”
