A proud group of Birmingham City University students from building, design and construction-related courses is celebrating after winning a series of awards for excellence from the university and Birmingham City Council.

Thirteen students from the Birmingham School of the Built Environment were each presented with a framed certificate of achievement as well as a Bullring shopping voucher at an award ceremony held at Birmingham City University last Friday (November 18).

The event celebrated an innovative partnership and commitment to collaborative working between Birmingham City Council and Birmingham City University that has developed between the two organisations over the past four years.

The ceremony was sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Building and the Constructing West Midlands framework – a collaborative partnership between Birmingham City Council’s Urban Design team and contractors, consisting of Willmott Dixon, Thomas Vale Construction Plc, Mansell Construction Services Ltd., Community Solutions West Midlands (Morgan Sindall/Lovell), Mitie Property Services (UK) Ltd., Kendrick Construction Limited, Integrated Water Services, Carillion Plc and Middleton Group Services.

The HNC Student of the Year, Harvir Kalsi, commented “The Urban Design Awards shows the excellent connections Birmingham City University has with employers, signifying that even in this economic climate, with hard work, there are still jobs to be found, the awards bring great encouragement to those who consistently work hard and demonstrates the University and its partners will show recognition where deserved.”

The Postgraduate Student of the Year, Richard Tole commented “The Urban Design Awards event was extremely well organised with an impressive list of supporting parties.  I felt particularly honoured that such a formal occasion included individual citations for each award winning student.  It was evident that the dignitaries present took the event seriously and were keen to interact with the students after the formal ceremony ended.”

Cllr Randal Brew, Cabinet Member for Finance at Birmingham City Council, added: “We are excited at the developments of the partnership and the support of the Constructing West Midlands framework. We are always keen to recognise fresh new talent and give students an opportunity in the industry. The winners of these awards have the potential to be the talent of the very near future.”

Ken Crawford, Associate Head of Birmingham School of the Built Environment commented: “Congratulations to the students on their awards.  The school offers its thanks to Urban Design for their continued support and we look forward to a fruitful working relationship with their Framework partners.  Thanks must also go to the staff in the school for their help behind the scenes in preparation for the event.”
