Council set to create 400 new homes in Highgate

The cabinet of Birmingham City Council will receive a report next week which sets out proposals to redevelop St Luke's estate in Highgate, Birmingham, creating up to 400 new market rented homes and over 500 jobs in the construction and supply chain industries.

Following the success of Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust - the council's house building programme – the local authority plans to join forces with Willmott Dixon and WM Housing Group, an affordable housing provider, to develop new homes for market rent as part of the delivery of the Big City Plan.

Cllr John Lines, Birmingham City Council's Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “This innovative approach using private sector funding and public land will enable the development of cleared land in Highgate to bring forward much needed new housing.

“Up to 400 new properties will be built alongside an improved neighbourhood park to serve the local and wider community.”

The involvement of WM Housing Group in the partnership also ensures a comprehensive and professional approach to the management of the new homes and park, and will ensure its sustainability over the long-term.

The Group already manages approximately 24,000 homes in the West Midlands, and is well placed to provide a new high quality market rented housing offer – setting a new standard for the private rented sector.

The proposal will create approximately 550 jobs in the construction and supply chain industries.  In addition, Willmott Dixon will provide training and apprenticeships as well as job opportunities for local people as part of the development.  Further opportunities will be made available as part of the management of the new homes.

Cllr Lines added: “For a long time Highgate has been recognised as a priority for the Council, but before now it has not been possible to begin redevelopment following the clearance of poor quality homes.

“I'm delighted that we are now able to provide the key to unlock the development area through working with the Birmingham Residential Development Partnership.”

The Partnership will begin working with residents to develop the proposals for the area.

    Great news – let’s hope the housing designs are imaginative and start to build on the character of the area. They need to be light and roomy and hopefully will use local styles and materials instead of identikit nowhere houses.
