Council tenants can now ‘home swap’ over the internet

Birmingham's council tenants will be able to swap their homes with social housing tenants from anywhere in England for the first time thanks to the internet.

The council has selected as its web-based mutual exchange partner, providing Birmingham City Council tenants with a simple, safe and effective way to exchange homes with other council tenants and registered social landlord tenants from Birmingham and further afield.

Over 300 existing or new tenants signed up to the site just days after it went live on Friday 5 February 2010. Previously tenants would have had to pay to use the service but since the council signed up to HomeSwapper council tenants will be able to use the service for free.

Nationally, hundreds of households already swap each month through HomeSwapper. The launch of the web based services provides tenants a wider choice of properties and places than ever before. Should they choose, hey could even exchange homes anywhere in the country.

HomeSwapper was selected by the council on the basis that they provided tenants with a better choice of homes choice and value for money than other similar services, following a competitive pitch.

Cllr John Lines, Cabinet Member for Housing said, “This is another great service for our tenants who will now have more choice and freedom in moving home. They can swap homes with anyone else living in social housing across the country, as well as with other social landlords in Birmingham.

“Homeswapper has shown us they have a high number of users in Birmingham and across the West Midlands, which are the areas where most people from Birmingham migrate to and from so we're glad to have them on board.”
Kevin Gilhooly, Head of Partnership Development at HomeSwapper said, “We are delighted that Birmingham City Council chose HomeSwapper as the provider for their mutual exchanges and providing their tenants with another highly effective housing option.  HomeSwapper was already popular with the residents of Birmingham but now that they can enjoy the service free of charge we expect many more to benefit and find a new home either locally, within the West Midlands or anywhere in the UK”.

Over 575 social landlords throughout the UK have already partnered with HomeSwapper.
