Response to Homes & Communities Agency announcement of successful bidders for 1.8bn affordable homes funding
(July 14):

Birmingham City Council has welcomed the news that it is to receive investment for the creation of new affordable homes for residents across the city. The council has been told by the Homes and Communities Agency that it is one of 150 successful organisations who bid for money as part of the new Affordable Homes Programme.

Cllr John Lines, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We are delighted with the news that our entire bid has been accepted which could see over 600 new homes built for rent and sale, this is in addition to over 700 new homes for rent and sale already being built through the Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust, making us the biggest house builder in the city.

“A key part of our bid was to keep rent levels down for our tenants and we will be looking to ensure we can achieve this negotiation with the HCA, before contracts are formally signed in the autumn.

“I would like to thank the regional HCA for their support throughout this process.”

The government's £1.8bn Affordable Homes Programme is an investment project to deliver more homes under a new more flexible form of social housing.  It will also fund a range of affordable home ownership products that will enable people to take their first steps onto the property ladder through the HomeBuy programme.
