Council's response to summer disorder examined

An expert in enterprise and the public sector has been appointed by Birmingham City Council to look into the authority's response to the summer's disorder.

Councillor Alan Rudge, cabinet member for equalities and human resources, who was appointed to lead on this matter said: “The report will look at a range of issues including how we worked with other agencies, how we helped businesses recover and the council's readiness to deal with events such as this.

“What the report will not do is duplicate the work already being done by the Home Office select committee or the Darra Singh enquiry. They are looking at the national picture; this will focus specifically on Birmingham City Council's response and whether there are learning points for the future.”

Dr Peter Latchford, a visiting professor of enterprise at the University of Birmingham, has been asked to provide an interim report by late December this year followed by a full report in March 2012.

The report will look at the council's resilience and strategy to mitigate future problems and examine its level of cohesion and how it engages with communities.
