Credit crunch Christmas

By on 08/11/2009 in News

With Christmas already on the horizon, Birmingham City Council is ensuring that everyone, regardless of their budget, has the chance to get into the festive spirit with a whole range of free and low cost events.

The free Christmas Lights Switch On concert on the 14 November will see a host of top stars take to the stage.  This year's line up from BRMB is stronger than ever, with the Sugababes, JLS, Pixie Lott, Little Boots, Alexandra Burke, Taio Cruz and the Noisettes just some of the amazing artists to perform.

There is also plenty for young families to do, with the popular Christmas Reindeer & Lantern Parade on Sunday 15 November.  Real reindeer will be pulling Santa on traditional Scandinavian sleighs, followed by a whole host of Christmas characters and local school children with lanterns, and all for free.

Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture said, “Birmingham City Council is committed to improving the quality of life of its residents and providing a wealth of leisure opportunities for all people to enjoy.  We know that this has been a difficult year economically, so many of our Christmas events are free or very low cost, allowing people to enjoy the festive season whatever their budget.”

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery will also be hosting visits from Santa every weekend from 28 November until Christmas, with each child receiving a special gift.  At just £2 this is great value for money.  The gallery's free Nativity Trail will allow visitors to see how some of the world's greatest artists have depicted the story of the birth of Jesus over the last 500 years.

The city's famous Frankfurt Christmas Market, opening on the 12 November, is always free to browse around and soak up the atmosphere.  Family Days at the markets are also planned for 14 November and 5 December, when free kids' activities with Heart FM and special offers and discounts will be available.

The city's beautiful parks will be providing plenty of free outdoor festive fun, including  the chance to make natural decorations, tree dressing and the Search for Santa in Lickey Hills Country Park.
