The Muslim Issues Steering Committee has agreed that the beginning of Ramadhan will be on 22nd August. Meetings will continue in order to achieve a consensus about a date for the celebration of Eid-Ul-Fitr at the end of Ramadhan.

These meetings on a regular basis discuss the formula for the sighting of the moon, to reach a decision regarding when each Islamic calendar month begins. It is of special significance for the month of Ramadhan as it signifies when the fasting begins. It is also important for the celebration of Eid-Ul-Fitr at the end of Ramadhan.

The fact that the majority of Mosques have agreed to follow the same formula will be of benefit to industry, commerce, and major organisations like Birmingham City Council. It means employers can plan cover for staff who may need to take one particular day off to celebrate Eid, rather than have people celebrate over two or even three days.

The Muslim Issues Steering Committee comprises of representatives from the four main Schools of Thought in Islam and also religious scholars from: The Birmingham Central Mosque, UK Islamic Mission, Hazrat Sultan Bahu Trust, Ghamkol Shareef Central Mosque, Confederation of Sunni Mosques, Muslim Foundation Mosque, Talim ul Quran Centre and Masjid Noor ul Uloom.
This committee was set up with the support of Birmingham City Council
