Dragon boat event to build bridges in city

Britain’s largest dragon boat race is coming to Birmingham on August 28 – and a city council Cabinet Member will be amongst the captains in charge of the boats.

Cllr Waseem Zaffar, Cabinet Member for Transparency, Openness and Equality, will lead a team of councillors, activists and leaders from across the city during the Nowka Bais 2016 event at Edbgaston Reservoir.

His team will compete in an exhibition match featuring the event’s Bangladeshi dragon boats against a crew assembled by the event organisers.

The event aims to bring the city’s diverse communities together to experience and celebrate Bangladeshi culture in a fun and sociable environment.

Cllr Zaffar said: “This is always a great day on the city’s calendar, which has a schedule of events that is full of depth in terms of diversity of activity - there really is something on offer for everyone.

“We need to support and celebrate cultural events like this as they bring city’s many different communities together by building bridges between groups who may not regularly take part in the same things.

“This will be an entertaining day for all Brummies and I am proud to be captaining a team of people from all walks of life - which captures the bridge-building spirit we want to encourage and promote.”
