Enforcement of dropped kerb and double parking prohibitions

Irresponsible parking could, hopefully, be a thing of the past as, from 1 June 2009, local authorities will have new powers under the Traffic Management Act 2004 (Sections 84, 85 and 86) to enforce the contraventions of parking alongside dropped kerbs or double parking.

In welcoming the new powers Councillor Len Gregory, Cabinet Member for Transportation & Street Services, said:

“I believe that these new enforcement powers will make a positive contribution to the City Council’s traffic management and congestion management duties and could assist residents and businesses who have experienced problems with people who park irresponsibly outside their premises.

“There is a need for a common sense, fair and consistent application of the new enforcement powers and therefore a “softly softly” approach will be taken in the initial few months so that drivers have time to familiarise themselves with the new legislation. A range of publicity information will be available shortly aimed at raising awareness of the new enforcement powers and providing the public with details of where and how the powers will be applied.”

The new powers, and full enforcement, will then be applied citywide from 1 September 2009.
