Footway gritting/clearance statement

Five crews have today (December 21) been gritting footpaths and thoroughfares used by high numbers of city centre Christmas shoppers as part of Birmingham City Council's ongoing efforts to keep the city moving.

They have been supported by City Centre Wardens and security staff from the Frankfurt Christmas Market, who have been clearing snow from the busy areas.

Jonathan Cheetham, Chair of Birmingham City Centre Partnership and general manager at The Pallasades shopping centre, said: “With four days left until Christmas, we are entering what is always the retail sector's busiest time of year as people look to get last-minute presents or take advantage of the sales that follow after the big day.

“Here at the Pallasades, footfall has remained strong, undoubtedly helped by the work of everyone at the city council involved in the effort to deal with the unusual levels of snowfall and cold weather we have experienced.

“The Pallasades, like the rest of Birmingham city centre, is very much open for business and we look forward to welcoming customers.”
