Foster Care Fortnight in Birmingham

By on 10/05/2012 in News

A fun-filled family event is being held this weekend to launch Foster Care Fortnight - with an aim to help recruit the 300 extra carers currently sought in Birmingham.

The Fostering Fiesta is being held at Cannon Hill Park and the MAC between 12pm and 6pm this Saturday (May 12) and admission is free.

The spectacular show is hosted by Free Radio and will feature the best of Birmingham's creative talent.

Activities featuring representatives from Birmingham City FC and Aston Villa FC are also planned, while the MAC Birmingham is joining in the fun by offering visitors the chance to enjoy workshops and performances in:

•    Capoeira

•    Arts & Crafts

•    Zumba

•    Poetry

•    Street/Irish/African Caribbean/South Asian Dance

Information stalls on fostering, children's rides and refreshments will round out the activities.

A total of 559 foster carers are currently approved by the local authority, with a further 35 going through the assessment process.

The council has a target to recruit between 200 and 300 new carers to increase availability and choice, so more young people from Birmingham are cared for locally rather than at a distance from the city.

A Birmingham City Council spokesperson said: “It is vital we help give all children the best possible start to their lives - and foster carers play an essential role in looking after some of the city's most vulnerable children.

“There is always a requirement for good carers to look after young people who find themselves in need, so we would urge anyone with an interest in getting involved to get in touch with us now.

“Being a foster carer is a huge but rewarding challenge. The Fostering Fiesta is a great starting point from which to find out more, hopefully starting the journey towards becoming one of Birmingham's latest carers.”
