Lord Mayor Michael Wilkes will be joined by German Ambassador to the UK Georg Boomgaarden and German pop sensation Patrick Lindner as he officially opens Birmingham's 42-day festive party - the Frankfurt Christmas Market on Thursday (Nov 12)

Heading into its ninth year, the Frankfurt Christmas Market is now a major highlight in the city's calendar and the economic impact has steadily increased.

The market, which last year attracted a record 2.8million visitors to boost the city's economy by a staggering £67million, is open seven days a week (10am to 9pm) from November 12 to December 23.

This year's event will be bigger than ever, with stalls stretching down New Street as far as The Marketing Birmingham Welcome Centre.

The fun begins at 10am on Thursday before the Lord Mayor and Mr Boomgaarden officially open this year's market at 5.30pm.

They will be joined by Lindner and Heart 100.7 breakfast presenters Ed James and Rachel New.

The Lord Mayor said: “I'm proud of the fact that we host the largest German Christmas Market staged outside Germany and Austria and the Frankfurt Christmas Market is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year in Birmingham.

“The event has grown from strength to strength over the last nine years and brings a huge number of visitors to Birmingham every year.

“Many of the stallholders return from Germany year after year because they're assured a warm welcome and the market is a real symbol of our longstanding friendship and partnership with the city of Frankfurt.”

Staged in Victoria Square and New Street, the Frankfurt Christmas Market features traditional stalls offering handmade toys, Christmas decorations, jewellery, clothing and craft goods.

Visitors can also enjoy the delights of German mulled wine (Glühwein), grilled sausages, pretzels, German beer, gingerbread, stollen, crepes and marzipan sweets.

The market will also once again incorporate a Christmas Craft Fair, featuring a selection of beautiful hand-crafted items created by local artisans, as well as ethnic goods imported from all over the world.
