Funding agreed for Chester Road improvements

Councillor Tahir Ali, Birmingham City Council cabinet member for development, jobs and skills, has welcomed the announcement of £8.3m government funding for improvements to the A452 Chester Road.

The remaining funding of the £11.8m scheme is provided by local partners and the council's capital funding.

The 2km stretch of road between the M6 and Tyburn Road is a major part of the highway network within north-east Birmingham. The council applied to the DfT for funding for improvements as traffic is subject to significant delays throughout the day.

Councillor Ali said: “With 40,000 vehicles using the road each day, delays on Chester Road have been causing real issues for businesses; this discourages further investment to the area, so I'm really pleased the situation has been recognised. It will also mean improved facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and people using public transport.”

The scheme was approved by the council's Cabinet in July, and work is likely to begin on site in spring 2014.
