The Wider Botanical Gardens Area Framework will go out to public consultation today, Wednesday 19 February. The aim of the document is to encourage ongoing investment while maintaining the area's historic and natural assets.

The framework covers the area bounded by Westbourne Road, Richmond Hill Road, Farquar Road and the cross-city railway line. It is home to the Botanical Gardens, prestigious independent schools, historic sports clubs, the Guinea Gardens and some commercial organisations. It has green open spaces, listed buildings and some of the city's most prestigious housing.

Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for development, jobs and skills, said: “This is about encouraging investment into the area whilst also protecting conservation areas and the general character of this part of the city. The framework looks at what is special about the area, what needs to be protected and enhanced, how best to address any issues and identify a way forward.”

The framework is not a formal planning document; it is a shared vision to assist organisations in the area plan for the future.

The six week consultation will begin on Wednesday 17 February and the document can be viewed at www.birmingham.gov.uk/widerbotanicalgardensarea where people can also send comments, until 4 April.
