Garden Waste Service – subscriptions for 2015 season

Birmingham’s green-fingered residents are being invited to sign up for next year’s Garden Waste Service – with an early bird £5 discount on offer for those who subscribe during the month of December.

The service – covering 20 fortnightly collections between February and November 2015 – costs just £30 (equivalent to just £1.50 per collection) if purchased during December, going up to £35 (equivalent to £1.75 per collection) in the new year.

Households that subscribed in 2014 who renew will continue to use the brown-lid bins they already have. Those purchasing this service for the first time will be provided with a 240-litre wheelie bin which will be delivered within 20 working days of payment being made.

Cllr Lisa Trickett, Cabinet Member for a Green, Smart and Sustainable City, said: “We’ve now completed the first year of our chargeable service, attracting more than 50,000 subscribers in the process. This is an encouraging base to build upon.

“It was a transitional year from the old free scheme where unlimited amounts of garden waste could be put out – a service we simply could not sustain as a result of central government budget cuts placing pressure on essential front-line services such as those we provide for vulnerable people.

“We’ve learnt a lot of lessons implementing our chargeable service and will continue to do everything we can to make the service run as smoothly as possible.

“Following a review of the 2014 service, we aren’t offering a half-season deal next year, so by signing up in December, residents will be getting the best deal we are making available for the upcoming year.

“The early bird offer is great value and the cost per collection for a clean, easy and convenient way makes this something I would urge anyone with a garden to consider signing up to.â€

Anyone interested in the service can subscribe using a debit or credit card by visiting Birmingham City Council’s website at www.birmingham.gov.uk/gardenwaste.

Alternatively, households can purchase by debit or credit card via the council’s contact centre by calling 0121 303 1111.
