Cllr Les Lawrence, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: “I would like to congratulate all Birmingham pupils who are collecting their GCSE results today.

“This is an important landmark in their education and a platform upon which to build future educational success.

“In an increasingly complex world it is vital that young people achieve a solid set of GCSEs including proficiency in English and mathematics.

“I am delighted to see a growing number of pupils in this city achieving this which is testimony to their efforts, the co-operation of their parents and the commitment of all those who work in Birmingham's schools.”

Tony Howell, Strategic Director for Children, Young People and Families, said: “I would like to congratulate all GCSE pupils in Birmingham for making it this far.

“It has been the result of a great deal of study and revision. Every year the overall standard of GCSEs in this city goes up and I expect 2009 to follow that trend.

“For everyone who has now completed Year 11, this September will be the start of a new academic year that will open up a whole world of exciting opportunities.

“It is happening as Birmingham embarks on a massive development programme that will see secondary schools in this city transformed over the next 15 years.

“I wish today's GCSE students well on their continuing journey and look forward to hearing about their future educational success.”
