Birmingham's most environmentally-friendly eating establishments are being sought as part of an annual awards ceremony backed by the city council.
The Green Restaurant Awards 2012, now in their third year, are sponsored by Veolia Environmental Services (Birmingham) Ltd and will be presented in the now-traditional categories of:
– Waste Management
– Energy Reduction
– Staff & Community
An overall winner will also be named, to follow in the footsteps of The Warehouse Café in Digbeth, which took top honours last year.
Cllr Timothy Huxtable, Chairman of the Birmingham Environmental Partnership, said: “Birmingham's restaurants rightly have a great reputation for the quality of their food, and their green credentials have been showcased over the last two years through these awards.
“As a major player in the city's economy, it is vital that restaurants play their part in helping to make Birmingham green - I am hopeful that we receive many entries this year because there are plenty of potential contenders for the awards.”
Alex Claridge, manager and co-owner of The Warehouse Cafe (winner of Green Restaurant of the Year 2011), said: “We passionately believe in local food, seasonal eating and making a commitment to sustainability.
“The Green Restaurant Awards are a fantastic chance to celebrate the future of food and the best of Birmingham. We’ve been awfully proud to be Green Restaurant of the Year 2011 and look forward to the 2012 awards!”
