Chefs from the Grameen Khana restaurant in the Balti Triangle are today celebrating after they won a city-wide competition to find the city's best balti.

The restaurant's 'Grameen chicken balti' was selected as the city's premier balti dish after a cook-off staged at the University College Birmingham between four of the city's leading balti restaurants.

The competition was organised by Birmingham City Council, and judged by Luke Tipping, executive chef from Birmingham’s Michelin starred Simpsons Restaurant.

Having won the title Grameenn Khana's will now win Council backing in a bid for the UK's national curry awards, while also be able to market itself as the home of the official Birmingham Balti for the next 12 months.

Mosiwar Hussain, owner of Grameen Khana, said: “I'm over the moon to have won, there are so many good restaurants in the city, that simply to make the final was a great achievement.

“Since Birmingham is the capital and birthplace of the balti, then to win the title of cooking the city's best balti - must by definition mean we have cooked the best balti in the world!”

The final cook-off was staged at the University's competition kitchens after entries were invited from across the entire city, and shortlisted based on a initial 100-word description of the dish and its influences.

Head Judge, Luke Tipping of Simpsons Restaurant, said:

“With Birmingham's rich balti heritage it was no surprise that the standard was so high, and picking a winner really was a close run thing. Personally I think the great thing about this competition is that it is all about the food, and those who cook it.

“It is great to see the chefs coming out from the kitchen and earning the recognition they truly deserve, as after all it is their skill on which Birmingham's reputation for balti cooking is built in the first place.”

The competition was staged to coincide with the launch of the new 'Essential Guide to the Balti Triangle' - a user friendly guide to restaurants, shopping and culture in the triangle which has been launched nationwide to attract even more visitors to the area.
