Green recycling collections set to start

Green fingered residents are being reminded collection rounds for Birmingham's new chargeable green recycling service begin next week (February 24).

The service will run for a 40-week growing season - giving householders an easy and convenient way of disposing of the grass cuttings and other garden clippings.

Collections are to be made on a fortnightly basis, meaning the £35 annual subscription (£33 if ordered online) covers 20 collections. Those who have ordered the service receive a calendar detailing their collection dates when the bin is delivered to their household.

A decision to introduce the chargeable service was made in response to central government funding cuts to the city council's budget, which meant the service - which does not have to be legally provided - was no longer affordable for the local authority to provide.

Despite the start of the service looming it's still not too late to sign up. To find out more, visit: www.birmingham.gov.uk/greenrecycling

Another alternative option is to purchase a composter for as little as £16.98 (plus £5.49 delivery) via the council's website. For more details, visit: www.birmingham.gov.uk/composting

To assist residents, a series of roadshow events is being staged across Birmingham to offer citizens advice and tips on how compost their garden waste.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the composting options available to them can visit the following sessions (all running from 10am until 3pm):

• 18/2/14 - Shard End Library, The Shard, All Saints Square, Shard End Crescent, Shard End, B34 7AG
