Half Marathon extension

The closing date for entries for the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon has been extended to September 25 to cope with a higher than expected number of entrants.

With more than four weeks to go until the Race Against Climate Change, on Sunday October 11, entries already exceed the final numbers who joined in last year's inaugural event.  More than nine and a half thousand runners have already signed up to take part, with a further 2,000 expected before the closing date.

The half marathon is sponsored by EDF Energy and organised by Birmingham City Council.  It takes place immediately after the IAAF/EDF World Half Marathon Championships, in which around 200 elite athletes from 50 countries are expected to compete.

The route will take runners in both events from Paradise Circus in the city centre, past Bull Ring and Edgbsaton Cricket Ground, through Cannon Hill Park, to Cotteridge and Selly Oak, along Pershore Road and back into the city centre, finishing on Broad Street.

Cabinet member for Leisure Sport and Culture Cllr Martin Mullaney said:  “We are  delighted to be inundated with entries for the race, and we are extending the closing date to make sure no-one misses out on the chance to take part.

“With the recent announcement that Paula Radcliffe is planning to run in the Half Marathon World Championships, I am sure many more people will yet be inspired to run in her footsteps.”
