Half Marathon smashes previous record

With over a week to go before the entry deadline, the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon has already smashed previous records.

Almost 13,500 runners have now signed-up for the October 24 event, with over 150 a day currently registering.

And that means up to 15,000 runners could tackle the 13.1 mile course this year - almost double the 8,000 who took part in the inaugural event in 2008.

Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture Cllr Martin Mullaney said: “The EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon has really taken off in the last three years and the high number of returning participants this year shows this event is fast becoming a fixture on the running calendar.

“We're already past last year's field of 12,000 runners and staff are working hard to process a late rush of entrants for what promises to be another hugely successful event.

“Our aim is to further develop the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon in the coming years, making it one of the top events of its kind in the UK.”

As a consequence of high interest in this year's event, the registration deadline was extended from September 24 to October 9 - just 15 days before the race.

Anyone interested in running in the 2010 event can sign-up via the official website www.birminghamhalfmarathon.com.
