Teenager Hannah Lanchbury got more than she bargained for when she visited Birmingham's Monarch Beach.

The 18-year-old from Bournville became the 100,000th visitor this year to the urban beach, in Chamberlain Square and won a pair of free flights from sponsors Monarch Airlines.

Visitors to the beach can make sand castles, relax in deck-chairs and enjoy ice creams, plus there are films and live music at weekends.

Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture said, “Birmingham City Council has one of the largest events programmes in the country, providing all of our residents and visitors with great opportunities to come together and enjoy themselves at little or no cost.

“The Monarch Beach has been hugely popular this year, and in the current financial climate its great that so many people are taking advantage of this free attraction.”

The Monarch Beach is located in Chamberlain Square, Birmingham city centre, and is free to visit.  Standard opening times are Sunday to Thursday 11am-6pm, Friday and Saturday 11am-9m.  For more information please call 0121 303 3008 or visit www.birmingham.gov.uk/beach or www.monarch.co.uk/beach
