Harborne Pool and Fitness Centre rebuttal

By on 23/01/2012 in Rebuttals

With reference to today’s Birmingham Mail story: Pool too expensive, say users we wish to point out the following:

  • Charges for swimming are set each year by Cabinet – based on benchmarking of public and private facilities across the UK.
  • In Birmingham, the larger swimming pools charge £3.80 for an adult swim in peak times and the remaining pools charge £3.60 for an adult swim in peak times.
  • Harborne is in line with the lower figure so reports claiming the new pool is ‘much more expensive’ than other council-owned pools are wholly inaccurate.
  • Each constituency also has a number of free swimming hours under the unique Be Active scheme.
  • Harborne Pool and Fitness Centre has 35 hours of Be Active activities a week – of which seven hours are swimming. That compares favourably with other centres across the city.
  • Be Active is not just about free swimming, it is an overall approach to encouraging a healthy lifestyle and other free activities are also available.
  • We will review provision as we approach the new financial year to ensure activities provided reflect the requirements of the local population.
  • Finally, DC Leisure has agreed to conform to all our concessionary schemes, so people with Passport to Leisure Cards can use the facilities at Harborne.
