The campaign to recruit an army of Olympic volunteers in Birmingham moves onto the next crucial stage this week as candidates bid for the chance to rub shoulders with many of the world's top athletes.

With gold medal hopefuls from USA Track and Field completing their Olympic preparations at the new-look Alexander Stadium, hundreds of people across the city have already expressed an interest in helping make the training camp a huge success.

Now more details have been revealed and volunteers have until May 11 to formally apply.

Organisers are recruiting two teams to support the USA Pre-Olympic Training Camp and are looking to appoint around 300 volunteers.

Sharon Lea, Strategic Director, Environment and Culture at Birmingham City Council said: “This is a fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity to work with some of the world's top athletes as they prepare for the Olympic Games.

“There's huge worldwide focus on the Olympic training camps and a large number of people across the city have already expressed an interest in volunteer roles.

“Volunteers are the 'lifeblood of sport' and it's only thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers that we can successfully deliver a wide range of sporting events and activities across the city.”
