Birmingham’s new Lord Mayor - Cllr Raymond Hassall - has taken up office after the Mayor Making ceremony which took place at the Council House on Tuesday (19 May) .

He has represented Perry Barr Ward since 1990 and has been at the forefront of leisure, sport and culture in the city.  In his spare time he enjoys keeping fit through running and ballet lessons.

Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Hassall, said: “I am really looking forward to meeting people across the city and telling people outside Birmingham what a wonderful city we have.

“One of my first duties will be to attend the Lord Mayor’s Show on Saturday 6 June which promises to be lots of fun for the whole family.  This year’s event will continue with the council’s programme of events commemorating the First World War and will feature Suffragettes and Land Girls in Victoria Square alongside the Staffordshire Regiment Museums’ First World Ward recruitment stand.

“Like so many people, I have lost close relatives to cancer.  My son Jonathan died in October 2013 and my sister Margaret died in December 2014.  I have therefore chosen Cancer Research UK as one of my charities for the year.  I will also be raising money for Birmingham Trees for Life, Fisher House UK which supports military patients and their families at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and the MS Society.”
