IT boost for city day centres

Two Birmingham day centres for clients with learning disabilities have been given a  boost thanks to Service Birmingham - the partnership between Capita and Birmingham City Council.

New 10MB-capacity computer lines installed by Service Birmingham have allowed day centres in Hockley and Sparkbrook to create modern IT training suites. The new lines mean that online training can be used by a number of delegates at the same time - making the centres an attractive training option.

The training rooms have provided welcome training facilities for the centre staff and also generated income when the training rooms are hired by other council departments. This income has been put to good use in the Hockley Opportunities centre by converting a storage room into a kitchen.

Carol Davies, Birmingham City Council's Group Centre Manager said: “The new lines have been a real lifeline to our centres. More people coming through our door means that our café in Hockley is doing really well and our pop up shop is increasingly busy. The income this generates is great but it's also given visiting delegates the chance to meet and interact with our clients. This is really good news for our centres and the clients that use them.”

Cllr Ian Ward, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, whose portfolio covers IT, said: “We are always looking for ways to modernise our facilities to ensure that the best possible quality of life is enjoyed by our service users. This is a great example of what can be done to deliver innovation, while also generating much-needed income for the council.”

Stewart Wren, Service Birmingham's Chief Executive said: “New technology opens a lot of doors both in terms of finances and improved services. We were pleased to work with Carol and her team and look forward to working with her again as we support with future upgrades.”

Birmingham City Council provides seven day centres across the city which are used by over 650 adult clients with learning disabilities.

Established in 2006, Service Birmingham is a joint venture between Capita and Birmingham City Council. The company runs the council's ICT function and helps drive forward its award-winning business transformation programme. It also manages the council's contact centre (which deals with more than two and a half millions calls a year) and runs Birmingham's revenues department (Council Tax collection)
