Join the IT crowd at the Elwood Centre

A pioneering computer course for adults with physical disabilities begins a new term on Tuesday 23 February. Based at the Elwood Centre in Reservoir Road, Erdington, the course is subsidised by the council's Adult Education Service and costs just £10 for the entire course.

No previous experience with computers is needed, and course participants will learn how to develop practical skills like searching for information on the internet and sending and receiving emails. Participants can also go on to gain a recognised certificate that could lead to entry for a Level 1 qualification such as ITQ.

Selina Vuma, 41, from Hockley, completed the course last year. Selina says:

“I had wanted to learn how to use the computer for some time, but I didn't know where to start. My social worker recommended this course to me and it has really increased my confidence. I feel really happy that I can now turn my computer on and know how to find any information I need. It means a lot that I have easy access to all the knowledge I could want on the internet. Learning to use email also means that I can communicate more with my children. I am looking forward to doing more courses to further my skills”.

The Elwood Centre has a fully accessible IT suite with specialist equipment to enable people with physical disabilities to use the computers.

Tito Samra, Community Support Manager at the Elwood Centre, comments:

“This course has broadened many people's horizons. It's not just about learning new skills, it's a chance to socialise in a welcoming, supportive environment and make new friends. Some of our learners have gone on to access other further education courses in the community.”

The course runs until 8th June and takes place on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm.

If people would like to take part in the course, they should contact the Elwood Centre on 0121 675 2600.
