Keep Birmingham Tidy, take pride in your city.

Birmingham City Council spends approximately £17m each year on clearing up after people who irresponsibly drop litter, including cigarette ends, on the city’s streets.

As part of a continuing campaign to persuade the public not to drop litter environmental health officers use as many different mediums as possible to bring the message home.

A 30 second advert is shortly to be shown in 5 cinemas across the city, for two weeks, advising that people who drop litter can be fined up to £2.5k,although they  are more likely to receive a fixed penalty notice of £75.  This campaign has been running in various formats over the last five years and has been particularly successful in getting people to use litter bins and take their rubbish home if their waste is fast food wrappers, drink containers etc.

It is now becoming obvious to the officers involved in trying to create a change and make our streets cleaner, that a minority of smokers are at the greatest risk of committing the offence of littering and we hope to reduce the number of fines that are issued on a yearly basis through these education campaigns.

Last year 1147 fixed penalty notices were served and all of the receipts from this money has been re-invested into education or enforcement patrols to bring home the message Keep Birmingham Tidy.

The film “Reaction to Litter “ was produced with the help of pupils from St Pauls School for Girls in Edgbaston who won a competition for the original voice over with their views of the unacceptable problem of litter.

Each one of us can make a difference by using the litter bins provided, putting waste in our pockets to take it home and, if we are a smoker, using a cigarette personal ashtray or a little tin to store our waste before it is disposed of in a litter bin.  Dropping litter is unnecessary and costs us all £17 per year to clear up someone else’s waste.

Together we can keep Birmingham tidy.
