Lady Mayoress - Mrs Vivienne Wilkes

The Lady Mayoress of Birmingham, Mrs Vivienne Wilkes, was recently awarded first prize from the Birmingham Writers' Group for her story 'The Heart of the Country' in their short story competition 'Birmingham Through Time'. 

The Lady Mayoress is donating her £50 prize money to the Lord Mayor's Charities.

The Lord Mayor's Charities for 2009/10 are:

  • Pancreatic Cancer Research
    The Birmingham Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research. The primary focus of the fund will be on research, conducted in Birmingham, into improved diagnostic methods.
  • Engineering Scholarships
    A fund for scholarships and material support for the study of Engineering, to encourage young people from Birmingham to take up Engineering as a course of study and as a future career.
  • St. Basil's
    The work of St. Basil's with young people to tackle homelessness and its consequences have helped to turn around so many young lives in Birmingham.
    Women Acting In Today's Society. WAITS is doing outstanding work to increase the involvement of women in the public life and business of our communities in Birmingham, from which all will benefit.
  • General Fund
    The fifth element of the Lord Mayor's charitable activities for 2009/10 will be a general fund for one-off grants to various good causes within the City.
