Learning centre on A-level standby

With A-level results released on Thursday, Birmingham City Council's business and learning centre is on standby to help thousands of young people considering their futures.

The centre at Birmingham's central library offers information and advice on learning and work opportunities throughout the city and region.

Whether you want to continue your education, enter the world of work, take a gap year or work abroad, staff are on hand to help.

The following services are offered at the advice centre:

• Access to all UK university prospectuses and guides, UCAS books and advice on writing personal statements
• It is a UCAS on-line registration centre
• One-to-one private/confidential interviews with qualified staff
• CV surgery - one-to-one advice sessions on writing and improving CVs
• Dedicated computers for compiling CVs, job search and completing job applications, available 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday
• Career-profiling software to identify strengths and weaknesses, areas of work you like and dislike, which then generates a list of suitable careers
• Information on grants and funding opportunities available
• Job library - the largest in Birmingham and Solihull, covering volunteering, what to do min your gap year, what to do with you're A-levels, career opportunity books
• Information on careers from advertising to zoo-keeping, starting your own business, running a franchise and self-employment
• Opportunities to brush-up on maths and English skills

Councillor Les Lawrence, cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “Getting your A-level results is an exciting time, but it can also be scary. The Business and Learning Centre is an invaluable service that can help people who are wondering what to do next.”
