The Lord Mayor, Cllr Michael Wilkes, welcomed representatives of the Burma Star Association to the Council House and reflected: “It was an immense honour to meet these heroes and their families.”

Established to promote the comradeship experienced in the bitter fighting in the jungles of Burma during the Second World War, the association is also a welfare organisation helping members and their widows in times of ill-health or other debilitating circumstances.

The Lord Mayor was keen to pay tribute to the work of the Burma Star Association and explained: “The experiences of these men in the Far East were not fully recognised at the time but that has been redressed in recent years.

I wanted to play my part in that recognition and feel immensely honoured that they should join myself and the Lady Mayoress at the Council House. I look forward to very close links with the Burma Star Association in the future.”
