Man Fined Over Grossly Underweight Puppy

A 23-year old man from Birmingham has been banned from keeping dogs for at least 10 years, and been given a 12 week suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to animal cruelty following the seizure of a grossly underweight puppy from his home last year.

Nathan Coates, 23, of Witton Lodge Road, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing in his duty of care to ensure that an animal's needs were met, at Birmingham Magistrates Court.

The case came after officers from Birmingham City Council seized Zeus, a six month old Dogue de Bordeaux type dog, from Mr Coates' former Hodge Hill home in May 2011.

Mr Coates was ordered to pay £500 costs, subjected to a four month evening curfew, and has been banned from keeping domestic dogs indefinatley – with no leave to appeal for a change to the ruling for at least 10 years.

Officers visited Mr Coates' property after receiving reports of an animal in a significantly poor condition . Such was the condition of the dog that officers, in conjunction with the police, immediately removed him from Mr Coates' care and took him to a vet for urgent examination.

After assessing Zeus, the vet concluded that the animal’s poor condition, with its rib cage alarmingly visible, was the direct result of not being provided with a proper diet and not being looked after properly.

Councillor Neil Eustace, chairman of the Public Protection Committee said: “This animal was in a shocking condition when we found him, and who knows what may have happened to him if we had not intervened when we did.

“I hope this prosecution sends a clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated in Birmingham. I also hope our decisive action encourages anyone else with concerns about the condition of an animal in their neighbourhood to get in touch with us.”

After being seized Zeus was nursed back to full health in a foster home, and has now been successfully rehomed to responsible owners.
