A Birmingham City Council employee has been recognized with a national 'Local Authority Hero' award for his work with volunteers at a local charity.
Deputy Head of Events, Planning and Commissioning, Mike Osborne, was presented with the award by Locality, the leading nationwide network for community-led organisations. He was nominated by Bidgley Power, a charity in Aston, both for his work with them and for the trust and strong relationships he has built up with the local community sector.
Pritesh Pattni from Bidgley Power said: “Working against a backdrop of major cuts to facilities and funding, Mike put his faith in Bidgley Power, a charity run by volunteers, to design and deliver a major new sporting festival for the city.
“The festival and legacy plan he developed with the charity helped to secure the All England Badminton Championships for the city for another five years. The festival saw 1,000 participants from disabled and deprived backgrounds take part in the sport for the first time and it was watched by 330 million people around the world.
“Mike's commitment to promoting volunteering and community development are a shining example of how councils and charities can work together to design and deliver major events.”
Deputy Head of Events, Planning & Commissioning, Mike Osborne, said: “I was both flattered and humbled to receive this award for facilitating and supporting the outstanding work that Pritesh and his organisation carry out in the community.
“This is a real boost to the events team and I thank both Pritesh and Locality for recognising the work that we do in opening up opportunities for the most excluded and empowering local people and communities. ”
Steve Wyler, CEO of Locality, added: “Our Local Authority Heroes Awards are designed to celebrate the local authority staff and councillors, such as Mike, involved in outstanding partnership working, and to say thank you to them for all their work.”
The Local Authority Heroes Award winners were announced at Locality's national policy symposium event, held at the RBS building on Bishopsgate, central London, on Monday 30 June 2014.
Locality's Local Authority Heroes Awards celebrate the nation's 'local government heroes' - the councillors and council staff who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to support community organisations in their local area - and all the 'heroes' were nominated by local community organisations, and Locality members, in their local area.
