My One Kick for Birmingham

OnekickThe Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Michael Wilkes puts his best foot forward as he joins the city’s World Cup bid.

With the fastest man in the world heading for Birmingham, wouldn't it be wonderful to think we might also play host to some of the finest footballers on the planet?

I recently had a chance to put into practice my skills at football, such as they are, by taking part in 'One kick for Birmingham' a campaign to ensure that Birmingham is an attractive part of England's bid for the World Cup in 2018.

It would be terrific to have the World cup in England again – and we've got so much to contribute in this city. Birmingham has great venues, great fans and there's a great City to enjoy.

The one kick campaign will involve getting people to film themselves kicking a ball and then putting the video up on the internet.

Luckily, my own one kick for Birmingham seemed to be pretty fair – but I don't think that it would have taken Gil Merrick in his prime to save it!

I know a number of my council colleagues have also shown their support and it's important that the whole city is behind this bid.

So have a go yourself and let's hope that both national and local campaigns get the success that they richly deserve.

Please note the www.backthebirminghambid.com website currently has a holding page at which visitors can be directed to the England 2018 Bid website to register their support and vote for Birmingham. It will be fully live from  14th  September when it will feature 'One Kick For Birmingham' More information about this will be forthcoming in the next week.
