A Birmingham City Council sports centre is proving to be a smash hit, winning national acclaim for making tennis accessible and affordable to a wider audience.

Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre in Kings Heath has been awarded coveted 'Beacon' status as part of the AEGON Parks Tennis programme in recognition of its high quality, affordable community tennis programmes.

The national accolade recognises the best community-focussed facilities offering free and affordable tennis as part of the AEGON Parks programme.

To achieve this status, facilities must also offer access to quality, affordable coaching as well as regular competitions for all ages and abilities.

Indoor and outdoor facilities at Billesley are open to everyone with no membership required. The centre offers Cardio Tennis sessions in addition to adult and junior coaching.

Birmingham City Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, Cllr Martin Mullaney, said: “Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre is a fantastic facility that we can really be proud of. It offers affordable tennis for the local community and helps keep the residents of Birmingham fit and active.

“Who knows, maybe the next Andy Murray could come up through the ranks after starting out at Billesley.”

Denise Wilkins, Acting Centre Manager at Billesley, added: “Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre is committed to providing affordable tennis for the local community, together with the opportunity to improve skills and enhance the enjoyment for tennis players of all levels.

“Working together with the Warwickshire LTA, Billesley has achieved Clubmark and now Beacon status. This has enabled an improved quality of service, to open up tennis to a wider audience.”

AEGON Parks Tennis aims to increase community access to tennis in parks and communities nationwide.

Delivered by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Tennis Foundation, AEGON Parks Tennis is a key programme in British tennis' drive to increase participation and grow tennis at all levels. The long-term aim is to have an AEGON Parks Tennis site acting as a centre of community tennis excellence in each of the local authority areas in Britain.
