When: 3pm Friday 12th February 2010

Where: 49-51 Alum Rock Road

What: Cllr Neville Summerfield and Liam Byrne MP will officially open a new car park in the city's most heavily ticketed public highway for illegal parking.

A new public car park is set to open this week in Birmingham's most notorious road for illegal on-street parking, where nearly 4000 motorists were ticketed in the last year alone.

The £200,000 car park on Alum Rock Road will provide 28 much-needed parking spaces in an area with a vibrant and popular shopping centre which suffers from congested streets and a lack of off-street parking for customers.

The new car park is located in the heart of the local shopping centre, on a site previously blighted by derelict property and attracting anti-social behaviour. It complements other improvements including new pedestrian crossings and improvements to the public realm, carried out over the last 12 months in a regeneration project worth £1.3 M in total.

Cllr Neville Summerfield, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “When you look at the number of people parking illegally in this area, day-in day-out, it is clear that current parking provision is desperately short and if we are serious about supporting the local economy on Alum Rock Road we must do something about it.

“Local shopping centres provide the crucial lifeblood of the city's wider economy, serving both the day-to-day needs of local people and also providing a home for hundreds of smaller and specialist independent retailers. That is why we are committed to doing all we can to support and enhance the appeal of such area to shoppers, businesses and residents alike.”

In 2008/9 Birmingham City Council issued 3995 penalty charge notices to vehicles parked illegally on the public highway in Alum Rock Road, more than 1500 more tickets than for any other individual road in the city.
