Birmingham City Council is investing heavily in Newtown, in Aston ward.

· A new multi-million pound youth centre on the border of Newtown and Lozells will be delivered. Facilities will include a sports hall, music room and recording studio, community theatre, training rooms and an IT suite (My Place funding).

· In the heart of Newtown, the council is working with partners to transform a run down area which was formally a number of industrial units dating back to the 19th Century. 168 brand new homes and apartments are being built at the back of Newtown Shopping Centre at part of the multi-million pound Crocodile Works project.

· As part of its £2.4 billion Building Schools for the Future programme, 3 schools in Newtown will be rebuilt or refurbished. Holte Secondary School, Lozells Junior School and Mayfield School will have impressive new facilities including a sports hall, playing fields, gardens and new parking.

· Proposals for £30 million ExtraCare retirement village in Pannel Croft, providing 180 homes for those who are 55 years+. It will include 18 health and leisure facilities.
Tackling gangs

· Birmingham City Council is a partner of the Safer Birmingham Partnership which includes West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Birmingham Primary Care Trusts, Third Sector Assembly, Probation Service and a range of other agencies that work together to tackle difficult problems that affect communities.

· Safer Birmingham Partnership has helped to substantially reduce gang related crime since 2000. Violent crime has reduced over time and gun Crime has continually and consistently fallen in Birmingham since 2003.

· Safer Birmingham Partnership acknowledges any murder is a tragic waste of life and therefore tackling gang related murders is high on its agenda. Between 2000-2003 there were 15 murders suspected to be related to gang activity. In the years 2007 – 2009 this had reduced to 2 per year. 

· 2010: Birmingham remains the safest “core city” in England and Wales.

· Gang related crime and violence is perpetrated by a relatively small number of people but can have a disproportionate community impact.
