No place for forced marriage

The Government today urged schools to be aware of signs of forced marriage among pupils.

Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families Cllr Les Lawrence responds to the new guidance published by the Forced Marriage Unit.

“Everyone, both in services, communities and schools, needs to be aware of the signs that may be the precursor to a forced marriage.

“We all have an individual and collective responsibility to prevent a practice that is unacceptable.

“No religion or culture exists in which forced marriage is acceptable. In many cases, due to the age involved, this is a child abuse issue.

“Help lines exist on Birmingham City Council's website and I urge people to use them rather than wait for someone else to do it.”
