Northfield One Stop Shop – making a difference in the recession

By on 08/09/2009 in News

Citizens affected by the recession in South Birmingham are being given a helping hand back into employment by the Northfield One Stop Shop.

A series of activities have been run, and are planned, to support people into work and to aid the sustainability of businesses in the Northfield Town Centre area under the umbrella of the Northfield Town Centre Partnership, co-ordinated by the Town Centre Manager employed by Birmingham City Council.

Notable recent successes include:

- 30 people working on a Personal and Community Development Learning (PCDL) programme called “Get that job”, run in partnership with Bournville College in July as part of an effort to broaden their skills for the job market.

- CV training (appointments) staged in partnership with Freshwinds (Professional Advice and Guidance) that are ongoing and fully booked.

- Job search and CV advice has been and is being offered on an appointment basis. Seven people have secured employment and a further 12 have attended interviews (since April 2009) as a result of this support.

- During August five street champions, residents who do voluntary work for the benefit of their community, have been on a CV/interview/application techniques course.

- Specific help (with Prospects) is offered to clients living within a designated postcode areas of Bartley Green and Weoley Castle who have been unemployed for more than 12 months.

- Supermarket firm Aldi held their interviews for staff for their new Northfield store at the One Stop Shop (July 29 and August 1, 2009), with five jobs secured in the process. Staff at the One Stop Shop were asked to sort through CVs and carry out key support tasks such as candidate preparation. A volunteer member of staff at the One Stop Shop has in fact been taken on by the store on a permanent basis.

- Volunteers from Pertemps People Development Group are gaining vital work experience at the One Stop Shop that is preparing them for the world of employment

Cllr Ken Wood, Northfield Constituency Chairman, said: “The Northfield Town Centre Partnership One Stop Shop is playing a crucial role in our effort to mitigate the effects of the recession locally.

“Although the number of jobs and training opportunities may seem small when presented on paper, every chance we create can turnaround the fortunes of a family or an individual.

“It is this positive effect that inspires the dedicated staff at the One Stop Shop - the service is there to help and we would encourage people who need support to make use of it.”

Officially opened in September 2007, the One Stop Shop is based at 693 Bristol Road South. It is run by the Northfield Town Centre Partnership which brings the people and businesses of Northfield together to improve the Town Centre.

I think this is the shop that was featured in an episode of the secret millionaire on 15th March. Am I right? and if so could you email me a contact number/email for the people that organise the food distribution shown. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
