Opportunities for people with learning disabilities

People with learning disabilities will have the chance to find out what services are available to them in Birmingham.

An opportunities fair organised by Birmingham City Council will be the first time services and information will be together in one place, with more than 60 stalls offering advice.

The free event on Monday 21 March will feature organisations from across the public and voluntary sector and will have entertainment throughout the day, including a drama group and a car wheel changing competition.

Sally Hyslop, a mum from Edgbaston who has a daughter with learning disabilities, will be attending the event.

“It will be a really good chance to just go to one place, with everybody there,” she said. “As a parent of a young woman with learning disabilities it will be nice to talk to other people and see how they can help.”

Her daughter Katharine, 20, attends the Teen and Twenty club which caters for people with learning disabilities.

“Until Katharine went to Teen and Twenty club she didn't socialise outside family and school; she needed and wanted to mix with people her own age and mainstream youth clubs would have been quite difficult for her.

“She has been going to the club for three years and it has been fabulous, she has learned so much and gained confidence, been away for weekends without us.”

Councillor Sue Anderson, cabinet member for adults and communities, said: “It is really important to let people know what opportunities are out there. Just because you have learning disabilities doesn't mean you can't do something that everyone else your age can do. It is not just about social events, it is about education and employment opportunities too and it will be great to see parents and carers come down to see what is available.”

The fair will run from 11am to 7pm at the Sapphire Suite, 215 Bradford Street, Digbeth.

Note to editors: Sally Hyslop is available to speak to the media.
