Shadow chancellor George Osborne has hailed the proposed £193million Library of Birmingham as a future architectural icon.

Osborne met Council leader Mike Whitby as he visited the city on Friday and was shown plans for the library, which will occupy a prime site on Centenary Square between the Birmingham Repertory Theatre (The REP) and Baskerville House.

He told the Birmingham Post: “I think the new library is the sort of building that people will come from all over the country, not just Birmingham, to see.

“It will bring the city together and people will want to be around it. I think the new library could become the sort of building that becomes an icon like the Lowry Building in Salford.”
