The Birmingham Behaviour Support Service (BSS) has been judged outstanding for both overall effectiveness and capacity to improve, by an Ofsted report.

The report states: “The service offers an outstanding level of education and care. Morale is exceptionally high and all staff are determined to change and improve the life chances of young people, many of whom have faced severe difficulties and traumas in their lives.

“Outcomes are far in excess of what might have been reasonably expected given the students' starting points. The exceptional quality of the outcomes is enhanced by various aspects of its work, especially its outstanding care, guidance and support.”

The service is a multi-site school that helps youngsters with behavioural problems.

Councillor Les Lawrence, cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “This is a wonderful achievement and I want to congratulate all the staff and pupils for their efforts; they are a credit to the city.   Further the excellent relationships that the service has developed with Schools to assist pupils in schools thus enabling their education to not be disrupted.

“The service deals with vulnerable pupils, many of whom have had a disrupted education, and the aim is to get them back into mainstream education and help them fulfil their potential. I am pleased the dedication of the staff and the efforts of the pupils have been recognised.”

The report found that safeguarding procedures are outstanding and there is a 'passionate determination' to ensure students enjoy an appropriate education in a safe setting.

It also says that pupils are encouraged to take responsibility, have a say in improvements through the student council and make a positive contribution to the wider community.

Head teacher Fiona Wallace said: “This is a great achievement and affirms that we have exceptionally skilled and dedicated staff who always keep the children at the absolute centre of all they do.”
