Perry Barr subway project approved

A project that is set to kick-start the transformation of Perry Barr has been approved.

The A34 North Perry Barr subways project is located between the A453 Aldridge Road and A34 Walsall Road. It will see three pedestrian subways at the junction in-filled and the centre of the island raised up to existing road level.

The subway project seeks to create a safe, attractive and convenient pedestrian route and will help stimulate future investment.

The project forms part of an emerging masterplan for Perry Barr, which identifies potential uses for key development sites, including amongst others the former BCU site and Gailey Park, alongside public realm and transport improvements.

The full business case for the subways project has now been approved.

Councillor Ali said: “There are a number of development opportunities in this area and this subway project is just the start; it will improve public space and pedestrian links in the area, including future development sites and reduce the perception of crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We want all new development to be safe and attractive as well as providing high-quality pedestrian routes, and the subway project is fundamental to this aim.”
