Police incident at Paradise Forum

21:10 Update: The incident has now ended with a safe and successful conclusion.  Birmingham City Council Highways is liaising with the Police as all roads and pedestrian cordons related to this incident have been lifted.

19:00 Update: The incident at Paradise Circus is continuing. All information below is still current. Please follow the advice below in relation to traffic and travel updates. 

Presently traffic is heavy but it is moving.

15:00 Update: Incident ongoing. West Midlands Police are still talking to a man who is situated on the bridge above Paradise Circus, near to the Chamberlain Square entrance to Paradise Forum. For safety reasons the section of Paradise Circus below the bridge remains closed.

11:00 Update: The incident at Paradise Circus is continuing. West Midlands Police are still talking to a man who is situated on the bridge above Paradise Circus, near to the Chamberlain Square entrance to Paradise Forum. For safety reasons the section of Paradise Circus below the bridge remains closed.

Birmingham City Council officers are liaising with Police to continue to manage traffic and disruption to pedestrians. Great Charles Street/Paradise Circus remain closed to traffic.

Birmingham City Council officers are liaising with the Police at the scene and are assisting in redirecting pedestrians.

Both the Central Library and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery are open to the public. The Central Library can be accessed via an entrance in Paradise Forum, which can be accessed only by its entrance onto Centenary Square. The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery can be accessed by pedestrians via the Waterhall and Great Charles Street entrances.

Birmingham City Council will be issuing a press statement to confirm Central Library and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery are open.

Paradise Forum is open to the public from Centenary Square but not from the Chamberlain Square entrance.

There is currently no indication of an end time for this incident. Birmingham City Council will continue to monitor traffic flows and implement appropriate measures to ease congestion later today for the evening rush hour. 

If you usually walk or cycle into the City Centre via the area affected then please plan an alternative route.

If travelling into or through the City Centre, continue to listen to local radio for regular traffic news, as they will provide the most current updates.

 09:55 Update: Birmingham Central Library has opened this morning. Access is via Paradise Forum. The foyer is not open to the public.

09:30 Update: Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is currently closed as a consequence of the ongoing incident.

08:15 Update: A section of Paradise Circus, Great Charles Street remains closed. Rising congestion.

07:00 Update  The incident at Paradise Circus is continuing. West Midlands Police are still talking to a man who is situated on the bridge above Paradise Circus, near to the Chamberlain Square entrance to Paradise Forum. For safety reasons the section of Paradise Circus below the bridge remains closed.

Road closures are in place on Paradise Circus between Great Charles Street and Paradise Street. Traffic is being prevented from joining Great Charles St at the exit to St Chads Tunnel and instead being directed through the Queensway Tunnel. Traffic is being allowed to cross Great Charles St at Newhall Street, but expect there to be delays and congestion at this point.

There is currently no indication of an end time for this incident. Because of this it is predicted that there will be traffic congestion in and around the area again through the rush hour this morning.

Paradise Forum and Chamberlain Square will also remain closed to pedestrians, so if you usually walk or cycle into the City Centre this way then plan an alternative route.

If travelling into or through the City Centre this morning continue to listen to local radio for regular traffic news, as they will provide the most current updates.

20:55 Update: Incident still ongoing, with no indication of resolution time. Small road closures (part of Paradise Circus and Great Charles St leading to Paradise Circus) still in force which continue to cause localised congestion. Otherwise, traffic appears to be flowing freely around the city.

No futher update will be given tonight unless there is a significant change in circumstances.

At 3.54pm today (Wednesday 29 September), police received a call from a member of the public who reported a man standing on railings on Paradise Bridge near Birmingham Central Library.

Officers have cordoned-off the scene and closed roads in the immediate area. The action is to prevent any traffic incidents and to stop passers-by from having an impact on the man’s actions or his state of mind.

Specialist hostage and crisis negotiators from the force are en-route to the incident.

Police are advising commuters of possible delays to their journey and ask for their understanding.

Roads closed are: Paradise Circus from Great Charles Street Queensway and Queensway Tunnel at Newhall Street. In addition, Paradise Forum is closed to pedestrians.
