An award winning website showcasing Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery's world famous Pre-Raphaelite collection is in the frame for another major accolade.
Fresh from the hugely successful Staffordshire Hoard exhibition, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery has another reason to celebrate with the news that www.preraphaelites.org has been shortlisted for a BIMA (British Interactive Media Association)
The website was recently named best website in the arts and culture class of the Interactive Media Awards and has also been also been shortlisted for two DADI (Drum Awards for the Digital Industries).
Now it is in the frame for another top industry award.
Produced by Birmingham web developers Tak Design, www.preraphaelites.org boasts the largest online collection of Pre-Raphaelite art in the world and over 2,000 fine and decorative artworks with never before seen clarity are available through Silverlight, a plug-in that offers the website and its users an amazing Deep Zoom functionality.
This means visitors to the website can study artworks in great detail, even in some cases seeing frays in the canvas, pencil etchings or brushstrokes. The plug-in gives users a unique opportunity to analyse Pre-Raphaelite work.
Led by Birmingham City Council, the project was funded with help from the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).
The website was launched at the end of June and has already attracted almost 50,000 visitors from over 150 countries, including the USA, India, China, Australia, Brazil and Japan.
Reflecting on the latest award nomination, Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture said: “The accolades keep coming for this fantastic website and that's hardly surprising as it's proving to be a massive hit with art lovers across the world.
“Birmingham's Pre-Raphaelite collection is world famous and this website means a world class collection is now accessible to art lovers across the globe.”
